Maintaining a pristine swimming pool requires more than just regular cleaning

Pool Water 101: Chemicals, Testing, and Balancing

It's essential to balance the water chemicals correctly. At GroundZero Pools & Spas, LLC, based in Lake Lotawana, Missouri, we specialize in new builds, pool renovations, and custom pools. We understand the importance of proper pool maintenance, including balancing water chemicals. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the proper way to balance water chemicals for swimming pools.

Understanding Pool Chemicals

Chlorine

Chlorine is the primary sanitizer used to kill bacteria and keep the pool water safe for swimming. It’s essential to maintain the right chlorine levels to prevent harmful microorganisms from thriving in your pool.

pH Levels

The pH level of your pool water measures its acidity or alkalinity. The ideal pH range is between 7.2 and 7.6. If the pH is too high or too low, it can cause skin irritation and damage pool equipment.

Alkalinity

Total alkalinity helps to stabilize the pH levels in your pool. The recommended range for total alkalinity is between 80 and 120 ppm (parts per million). Proper alkalinity prevents rapid changes in pH levels.

Calcium Hardness

Calcium hardness refers to the amount of calcium dissolved in the pool water. The ideal range is 200-400 ppm. Too low calcium hardness can lead to corrosion, while too high can cause scaling on pool surfaces and equipment.

Cyanuric Acid

Cyanuric acid stabilizes chlorine, helping it last longer in sunlight. The recommended range for cyanuric acid is 30-50 ppm. Too much cyanuric acid can reduce chlorine's effectiveness, leading to algae growth and other issues.

Testing Pool Water

Regular testing is crucial to ensure your pool's chemical levels are balanced. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Use Test Strips or Test Kits: These are available at pool supply stores. Follow the instructions carefully to test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid levels.

  2. Electronic Testers: These devices provide a more accurate reading of your pool water’s chemical levels. They can be a worthwhile investment for pool owners who want precise measurements.

  3. Professional Testing: GroundZero Pools & Spas, LLC offers professional pool water testing and maintenance services. Our experts can ensure your pool water is perfectly balanced, providing you with peace of mind.

Balancing Pool Chemicals

Step 1: Adjust pH Levels

If your pH level is too high (above 7.6), add a pH reducer (muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate). If it’s too low (below 7.2), add a pH increaser (sodium carbonate or soda ash).

Step 2: Adjust Total Alkalinity

To raise alkalinity, add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). To lower it, add muriatic acid or a specific alkalinity reducer.

Step 3: Adjust Calcium Hardness

If calcium hardness is too low, add calcium chloride. If it’s too high, partially drain the pool and refill with fresh water to dilute the calcium concentration.

Step 4: Adjust Cyanuric Acid

Add cyanuric acid if levels are below 30 ppm. If levels are too high, partially drain the pool and refill with fresh water.

Step 5: Maintain Chlorine Levels

Use chlorine tablets, granules, or liquid chlorine to maintain appropriate chlorine levels (1-3 ppm). Shock the pool weekly or after heavy use to eliminate contaminants.

Ongoing Maintenance Tips

  • Weekly Testing: Test your pool water at least once a week to ensure chemical levels remain balanced.

  • Shock Treatment: Perform a shock treatment weekly or after heavy use to eliminate contaminants.

  • Filter Maintenance: Clean or backwash your pool filter regularly to ensure it’s working efficiently.

  • Consistent Cleaning: Skim, brush, and vacuum your pool regularly to prevent debris buildup and maintain water clarity.

By following these steps, you can ensure your pool water is safe, clean, and enjoyable for swimming.
